Just as cute in person!

July 14, 2009

Over July 4th weekend, Christopher and I drove up to central Maine (en route to see famly on the coast) to meet the breeders and litter. We received a number of photos from Sue and Dave at Wassookeag prior to our visit but we were eager to experience the pups in person.

We arrived shortly after lunch on July 2nd and stayed for about an hour. At 6 weeks, the puppies were insanely cute and playful. They had a tendency to pile on eachother, stepping on their siblings’ ears and tails in the process. At one point their mom, Charlotte, came out to feed them. It was a pretty hilarious sight — yelping pups and milk spurting in every direction. It seemed like more milk ended up on their coats than in the pup’s mouths, but they certainly look nourished (and are also eating dry food).

The visit made getting Sadie feel that much more real… although, we didn’t know exactly which pup was ours! (Wassookeag temperament tests their litters at 7 weeks and matches them to the appropriate family). Having seen the dogs at nearly 7 weeks, their personalities certainly began to show.  As Dave from the kennel noted, there was not one stand-out alpha or runt of the litter. We were relieved that the pups seemed moderate in temperament, as we are not looking for either an expecially dominant or timid pup.

After 45 minutes of playing and a milk break, the pups were wiped! You forget that they are still babies and, suddenly, they all plopped down on the grass and  began to nap. All became quiet and calm so  Christopher and I thanked Dave and decided to head out to our next destinatation. All in all, the visit to Wassookeag made us very excited to take Sadie home!
Here are some photos from the visit :)
